The Half-Light City is a secondary world divided between the Night World, ruled by Blood Lords and Beast Kind, and the human territories protected by mages. The Fae occupy a shadowy middle ground, and the uneasy peace between all four factions drives the conflict across the series.
M.J. Scott’s debut novel Shadow Kin (2011) introduced this world through a story of enemies forced into an alliance. Each of the four books pairs a different hero and heroine – featuring tropes like enemies to lovers, reluctant partnerships, and second-chance romance – while advancing the larger story of the city’s political crisis. All four books were published by Roc, Penguin’s science fiction and fantasy imprint, and all four were finalists in the Australian Romance Readers Association Awards.
