Gyo is one of Junji Ito’s most viscerally disturbing works. The premise sounds absurd: dead fish crawl out of the ocean on metal legs. But Ito plays it completely straight, and as the invasion escalates from small fish to sharks and whales, the horror becomes genuinely overwhelming. The story traces the mechanical plague back to a bioweapon experiment from World War II, connecting the body horror to real historical atrocity.
Originally serialized in 2001-2002, Gyo was collected in two volumes with an English-language edition from VIZ Media. It was adapted into an anime film in 2012.
