The Guns of Navarone series follows a team of Allied commandos on increasingly dangerous missions during World War II. The original novel (1957) sends a small group to destroy a pair of massive German guns on an Aegean island fortress, and it became one of the defining adventure novels of the twentieth century.
Force 10 from Navarone (1968) picks up the story immediately after the first book, sending the survivors on a new mission in Yugoslavia. Both novels were adapted into major films. After MacLean’s death in 1987, Sam Llewellyn wrote two additional sequels, Storm Force from Navarone and Thunderbolt from Navarone, published in 1998 and based on outlines MacLean had left behind.
The series is best read starting with The Guns of Navarone and followed by Force 10 from Navarone. The posthumous sequels are optional but provide more adventures for fans of the original characters.
