The Gunnie Rose series by Charlaine Harris Schulz imagines a version of America that split apart in the 1930s. In this alternate world, different regions became separate nations with their own laws and cultures, and magic is real. Lizbeth “Gunnie” Rose is a sharpshooter and navigator-for-hire in Texoma (formerly Texas and Oklahoma). An Easy Death (2018) introduces her world, and the series continues through six more books.
The books combine Western genre elements with fantasy and alternate history. Lizbeth is a tough, practical protagonist who takes paying jobs escorting travelers through dangerous territory. Russian wizards, Mexican politics, and American power struggles create the conflicts she gets drawn into. The series shows Harris working in a genre quite different from her vampire and mystery novels.
