Gregory Maguire’s 18 standalone novels span his entire career, from his debut The Lightning Time (1978) through A Wild Winter Swan (2020). Many of his adult standalones follow the same approach as the Wicked Years, taking familiar stories and retelling them from an unexpected angle. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (1999) sets Cinderella in the Dutch Golden Age. Mirror Mirror (2003) places Snow White in Renaissance Italy with Lucrezia Borgia as the villain. After Alice (2015) sends Alice’s friend Ada tumbling into Wonderland.
His earlier work is mostly children’s fiction, including The Dream Stealer (1983) and I Feel Like the Morning Star (1989). Egg & Spoon (2014), set in Tsarist Russia with Baba Yaga, earned a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Honor. The standalones show Maguire’s range, from children’s adventure to dark literary fantasy.
