The Gregor Reinhardt series by Luke McCallin is a historical crime fiction series set during and after World War II. Reinhardt is a former German intelligence officer and a reluctant member of the Wehrmacht who finds himself investigating murders in settings where justice is nearly impossible to achieve. The series begins in occupied Sarajevo with The Man from Berlin (2013), where Reinhardt must solve a double murder while navigating the competing interests of the German military, local partisans, and the Croatian Ustasha.
Subsequent books follow Reinhardt as the war progresses and eventually ends. The Pale House (2014) keeps him in the Balkans as the German retreat creates new dangers, while The Divided City (2016) moves to postwar Berlin, where the occupying powers are carving up the city. From a Dark Horizon (2021) goes back in time to World War I, exploring Reinhardt’s earlier years.
McCallin’s experience with the United Nations in the Balkans gives the Sarajevo-set books a grounded, lived-in quality. The series has been praised for its attention to historical detail and for making Reinhardt a morally complex lead character who is neither hero nor villain but someone trying to do decent work in indecent circumstances. Note that L’uomo di Berlino is the Italian edition of The Man from Berlin, and The Ashes of Berlin is the UK title for what was published in the US as The Divided City.
