Grant Moves South (1960) covers Grant’s rise from an obscure colonel in Illinois to the general who captured Vicksburg and split the Confederacy in two. Grant Takes Command (1969) follows him through the final campaigns of the war.
Together, these two books give Catton’s account of the most important Union commander. They complement the Army of the Potomac Trilogy by showing the same war from the western theater and from the top of the command structure.
