Grace & Favor is a six-book cozy mystery series by Jill Churchill, set in upstate New York during the Great Depression. The series follows siblings Lily and Robert Brewster, who were raised wealthy in New York City but lost everything in the 1929 stock market crash. Their great-uncle Horatio left them a mansion called Grace and Favor on the Hudson River near Franklin Roosevelt’s Hyde Park, with the condition that they live in it for ten years.
Each book involves a murder or mystery in the small town around the mansion, and Lily and Robert find themselves investigating alongside the local police. Anything Goes (1999) sets up their arrival and first case, while the subsequent books build on their growing connections in the community. The titles all come from popular songs of the 1930s, giving the series a period flavor. Churchill brings the same cozy, character-driven mystery approach that made her Jane Jeffry series popular.
Churchill, whose real name is Janice Young Brooks, won both the Agatha Award and the Macavity Award for her mystery writing. Readers who enjoy historical cozies with a well-drawn setting and likable recurring characters will find this series a comfortable fit. The Depression-era backdrop gives the books a distinct atmosphere that sets them apart from most suburban cozy mysteries.
