The Gower Street Detective series launched with The Mangle Street Murders in 2013 and ran for five books through Dark Dawn Over Steep House in 2017. The books are set in Victorian London and follow Sidney Grice, a private detective whose intellect is matched only by his rudeness, and March Middleton, the orphaned goddaughter who has come to live with him at 125 Gower Street.
The mysteries themselves are intricate period puzzles, but the real draw is the relationship between Grice and Middleton. The Curse of the House of Foskett, Death Descends on Saturn Villa, and The Secrets of Gaslight Lane each deepen the dynamic while presenting new cases. M.R.C. Kasasian writes Victorian London with authentic detail and a dark comic sensibility.
