Gods Squad takes Maz Evans’s formula of ancient mythology colliding with the modern world and applies it to the Maya pantheon in the first book, then Egyptian gods in the second. The series features a new set of child heroes who find themselves working alongside (and frequently exasperated by) divine beings who have very strong opinions and very poor impulse control.
The comedy is broad and the pace is quick, which makes both books accessible to readers as young as eight. Evans writes gods who are genuinely funny rather than simply silly, and the mythological detail is accurate enough to send curious readers off to reference books. Oh Mummy Mia!, the second entry, shifts focus to Egyptian mythology and keeps the energy of the first while expanding the world into a new ancient tradition. Both books stand on their own as well as working together as a series.
