Give the Dark My Love (2018) introduces Nedra Brysstain, a girl from the rural north of the island nation of Lunar Island who travels south to study alchemy at a prestigious academy. When a devastating plague begins killing her people, Nedra pushes past the boundaries of acceptable magic and discovers she can raise the dead. The novel blends fantasy school settings with body horror and political corruption.
The sequel, Bid My Soul Farewell (2019), picks up with Nedra grappling with the consequences of her necromancy. The undead she has raised are not quite what they were in life, the government wants to control or destroy them, and Nedra must decide how far she is willing to go. The duology stands out in YA fantasy for its willingness to let the protagonist make genuinely dark choices without easy redemption.
