A Girl Called Echo follows Echo Desjardins, a Metis teenager in Winnipeg who finds herself transported to key periods in Indigenous Canadian history. Each volume covers a different historical event: the Pemmican Wars, the Red River Resistance, the Northwest Resistance, and the Road Allowance era. Echo’s classroom lessons become lived experiences as she witnesses these events firsthand.
The series is illustrated by Scott B. Henderson and published by HighWater Press. Vermette uses the graphic novel format to make Metis history accessible to young readers, alternating between Echo’s modern-day struggles with identity and belonging and the historical episodes that shaped her people. The 2023 omnibus collects all four volumes in a single edition.
