Aaron Elkins wrote nineteen Gideon Oliver mystery novels over more than three decades, starting with Fellowship of Fear in 1982 and ending with Switcheroo in 2016. The early books came out at a steady clip through the 1980s and 1990s, with titles like The Dark Place, Murder in the Queen’s Armes, Old Bones, and Curses! arriving every year or two. The pace slowed somewhat after Skeleton Dance (2000), but Elkins continued adding new entries through the 2000s and into the 2010s.
The series is best read in publication order. Gideon Oliver appears throughout all nineteen books, and while individual mysteries are self-contained, the character’s life and relationships develop over time. Readers starting from Fellowship of Fear have a long and consistent run of mysteries ahead of them.
