The Ghost Roads series follows Rose Marshall, a phantom hitchhiker killed on prom night in the 1950s who has spent decades traveling America’s highways as a ghost. Sparrow Hill Road (2014) established the mythology, The Girl in the Green Silk Gown (2018) deepened it, and Angel of the Overpass (2021) continued Rose’s story. Earlier short stories like Good Girls Go to Heaven (2010) and Coins of Chaos (2013) also contribute to the series.
McGuire builds the Ghost Roads around American road culture and urban legends, creating a supernatural mythology grounded in diners, highways, and the liminal spaces where the living and dead intersect. Rose is a different kind of protagonist — already dead, navigating a world of ghosts and routewitches that runs parallel to our own.
