Gene Luen Yang’s standalone work includes some of his most celebrated books. American Born Chinese, published in 2006, weaves together three seemingly separate storylines — a Chinese American boy navigating school, the legend of the Monkey King, and a sitcom parody — into a graphic novel about identity, shame, and acceptance.
Dragon Hoops is a nonfiction graphic novel about Yang’s experience following his high school’s basketball team during their championship season. Level Up follows a college student torn between his father’s wish that he become a doctor and his own love of video games. The Eternal Smile, a collaboration with Derek Kirk Kim, collects three genre-bending short stories.
