Gavin Lyall’s seven standalone novels, published between 1961 and 1975, established his reputation as one of the best British thriller writers of his era. They split into aviation thrillers (The Wrong Side of the Sky, The Most Dangerous Game, Shooting Script, Judas Country) and Euro-thrillers (Midnight Plus One, Venus with Pistol, Blame the Dead). All are written in the first person with a sardonic, hard-boiled style.
His debut The Wrong Side of the Sky (1961) drew on his RAF experience. Midnight Plus One (1965) and Shooting Script (1966) won consecutive CWA Silver Daggers. P.G. Wodehouse praised his debut as “Terrific.”
