The Garth Carson series by Brian Wiprud follows an eccentric New York City taxidermy collector who keeps stumbling into criminal situations. Pipsqueak (2002), the first book, sets the tone: Garth is moments away from buying the original Pipsqueak the Nutty Nut, a stuffed-squirrel puppet from a 1950s kids’ TV show, when everything goes wrong. A biker, a redhead, and a murder derail his plans and kick off a chain of increasingly absurd events.
Stuffed (2005) and Tailed (2007) continue Garth’s misadventures, each putting him in the path of new criminal schemes connected to his unusual hobby. The series won attention for its humor and inventive plotting, with Pipsqueak earning the Lefty Award for Best Humorous Mystery. Readers who enjoy crime fiction that does not take itself too seriously will find Garth Carson good company.
