The Gaea Trilogy is John Varley’s most ambitious series. Titan (1979) opens with a crew of astronauts discovering that what they thought was a moon of Saturn is actually a living being, a vast wheel-shaped habitat housing entire ecosystems and sentient species.
Wizard (1979) and Demon (1984) expand the story as humans become entangled in the politics and power struggles within Gaea. The trilogy blends hard science fiction with mythological imagery, and the character of Gaea herself becomes increasingly unpredictable and dangerous as the series progresses.
