The Rainshadow series by Jayne Castle (the pen name Jayne Ann Krentz uses for her futuristic paranormal romances) is set on Rainshadow Island in the World of Harmony. In this setting, human colonists from Earth settled a new planet centuries ago and developed psychic abilities over time. Rainshadow Island is one of the more dangerous and mysterious locations in this world, with underground cave systems, alien energy sources, and strange creatures.
The six books, published between 2011 and 2016, each follow a different couple. Canyons of Night (2011) opens the series on the island. The Lost Night (2012) and Deception Cove (2013) continue exploring its mysteries. The Hot Zone (2014) and Siren’s Call (2015) push deeper into the island’s secrets, and Illusion Town (2016) shifts to a Las Vegas-like city in the Harmony world while keeping ties to the Rainshadow setting.
A running feature of the series is the dust bunnies, small alien creatures who look cute but have hidden talents and sharp teeth. Castle’s Harmony novels have a loyal readership, and the Rainshadow books are a good entry point for readers who want to try the futuristic side of her work. Each book stands alone as a romance, but reading them in order gives the full picture of the island and its history.
