John Lutz’s Fred Carver series transplants the private eye novel to Florida with a protagonist who earned his scars. Carver is a former cop who walks with a cane after being shot in the line of duty. Rather than giving up, he becomes a private investigator, taking on cases across the state. The Florida setting, with its heat, humidity, and transient population, gives the series a distinctive atmosphere.
The ten books, from Tropical Heat (1986) to Lightning (1996), feature titles that play on fire and heat imagery. Scorcher, Flame, Bloodfire, Hot, Spark, Torch, and Burn all evoke the Florida climate while hinting at the intensity of the cases Carver handles. The series is darker and more violent than the Alo Nudger books, reflecting the grittier setting and the harder edge of Carver’s personality.
