The Frank Behr series by David Levien follows a private investigator working cases in Indianapolis. City of the Sun (2008) introduces Behr as a former cop turned PI who gets drawn into a missing-child case. Where the Dead Lay, Thirteen Million Dollar Pop, and Signature Kill continue his story through increasingly dangerous territory over the next seven years.
The four books should be read in publication order, as Behr’s personal life and professional reputation change from one installment to the next. Levien writes with the economy of a screenwriter, keeping chapters short and the pace high. Indianapolis is a refreshing setting for the genre, and Behr himself is a memorable lead, big, stubborn, and dogged in a way that feels earned rather than manufactured.
