Frances Parkinson Keyes’s non-fiction output includes 17 works spanning travel writing, religious biography, memoir, and even a cookbook. Her earliest non-fiction, Letters From a Senator’s Wife (1924), drew on her personal experience as the spouse of a New Hampshire senator and gave readers a candid look at Washington political life. She returned to memoir and observation throughout her career.
Her religious biographies, including books about St. Teresa of Lisieux, Mother Cabrini, and St. Anne, reflect her Catholic faith and her interest in women’s spiritual lives. The Frances Parkinson Keyes Cookbook (1955) drew on her love of food and entertaining, particularly the Louisiana cuisine she wrote about so often in her fiction.
