Frances Hardinge’s seven standalone novels span from 2007 to 2023. Each book creates a distinct world with its own rules and dangers. Verdigris Deep (2007, also titled Well Witched) involves children who steal coins from a wishing well and must grant the wishes themselves. A Face Like Glass (2012) is set in an underground city where faces must be learned like languages. Cuckoo Song (2014) draws on the changeling myth.
The Lie Tree (2015) is her most decorated novel, winning the Costa Book of the Year. A Skinful of Shadows (2017) is set during the English Civil War and involves ghosts that can possess the living. Her most recent standalone is Unraveller (2023), a fairy tale about curses and the people who undo them.
