Fran Rizer’s two standalone novels move away from the lighthearted tone of her Callie Parrish mysteries. Kudzu River, published in 2014, is a thriller about three women whose lives intersect around a serial killer. Rizer herself has said it is “not a cozy.”
The Horror of Julie Bates, published in 2016, goes further into dark territory. It is a paranormal horror novel about a young woman in Columbia, South Carolina, who is being stalked by something supernatural. Both books are set in South Carolina, keeping Rizer’s consistent regional focus, but the genre and mood are very different from her mystery series.
