Paths of Darkness shifts the focus from large-scale warfare to more personal conflicts. The Silent Blade brings back the assassin Artemis Entreri and the Crystal Shard, two threats from the earliest Drizzt novels, while also dealing with Wulfgar’s traumatic return from years of imprisonment in the Abyss.
The Spine of the World is unusual in the series for following Wulfgar almost exclusively as he struggles with his demons in a very literal and figurative sense. Sea of Swords brings the companions back together. The trilogy explores the toll that years of adventure and loss take on the characters, giving the series emotional depth beyond the swordplay.
