The Foreworld Saga began as a collaborative experiment between Neal Stephenson and several other writers, including Erik Bear, Greg Bear, Joseph Brassey, and others. The project grew out of Stephenson’s interest in historical martial arts and the Knights Templar, eventually producing seventeen interconnected stories spanning novellas and full novels.
The core of the saga is The Mongoliad trilogy, set during the Mongol invasion of Europe in the thirteenth century. Surrounding it are shorter works — Sinner, The Lion in Chains, Hearts of Iron, and others — that expand the Foreworld timeline from ancient to near-modern history. Each entry explores combat traditions and warrior cultures from different periods and regions.
