The Flash in a Flash series collects Walter Jon Williams’s experiments in ultra-short storytelling. The first volume, Baby Shoes (2015), takes its name from the famous six-word story often attributed to Hemingway, and the collections that follow continue in the same spirit of compressed narrative. Each volume gathers dozens of tiny stories, some just a few sentences long, that pack a surprising amount into very little space.
Flash! (2017), Itty Bitty Writing Space (2019), and Worth 1,000 Words (2020) round out the series. Williams approaches flash fiction with the same genre-hopping instinct he brings to his novels, so these collections bounce between science fiction, fantasy, horror, humor, and the simply strange. They are a fun side project from an author better known for doorstop space operas and cyberpunk novels.
