The Fatma El-Sha’arawi series, also known as the Dead Djinn Universe, is set in an alternate Cairo around 1912. In this world, a man named al-Jahiz opened a portal to the supernatural realm decades earlier, flooding Egypt with djinn, magic, and advanced technology. The Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities was created to manage the consequences.
A Dead Djinn in Cairo (2016) introduces Agent Fatma el-Sha’arawi, the youngest woman working for the Ministry, as she investigates an unusual death that leads her through Cairo’s supernatural underworld. The Angel of Khan el-Khalili (2017) tells a standalone story set in the same world. The Haunting of Tram Car 015 (2019) follows two other Ministry agents dealing with a possessed streetcar. A Master of Djinn (2021), the full-length novel, brings Fatma back for a case involving a murdered secret brotherhood and someone claiming to be al-Jahiz returned from the dead. It won the Nebula and Locus Awards.
