The Fantastically Great Women series began in 2016 with Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World, a non-fiction picture book that highlighted real women whose stories are often absent from mainstream history books aimed at children. The book drew on Kate Pankhurst’s family connection to suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst and her belief that young readers deserved to learn about a wider range of historical figures than typically appeared in children’s non-fiction.
Each book in the series follows a consistent format: short profiles of women, each accompanied by bright, characterful illustrations in Kate Pankhurst’s signature style. The books are designed to be browsed as much as read cover to cover, making them suitable as gifts, classroom resources, or bedside reading. Titles in the series include books on women in science, the arts, politics, and environmental activism.
The series has been translated into more than 22 languages and the first book was adapted for the stage. The books have been shortlisted for multiple awards, including the NIBBIES Children’s Illustrated and Non-fiction category.
