The Ex-Heroes series by Peter Clines takes two popular genres and smashes them together: superheroes and zombies. Set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, the series follows a group of superheroes who protect a community of survivors holed up in the Paramount Studios lot. The zombies here are called “exes” (short for ex-humans), and some of them retain the super powers they had in life, making them far more dangerous than ordinary undead.
Starting with Ex-Heroes (2010) and running through Ex-Isle (2016), the five-book series grows in scope with each entry. The early books focus on survival and defending the community, while later installments introduce new threats, rival groups, and bigger mysteries about the origin of the plague. Clines tells the story with a mix of present-day action and flashback chapters that reveal each hero’s origin, similar to a TV show structure.
