Evolution is one of Baxter’s most unusual books. Rather than focusing on space travel or physics, it turns the lens on biology and the deep history of life on Earth. The early sections follow small, rat-like proto-primates surviving the extinction of the dinosaurs. Later chapters trace our ancestors through millions of years of change, reaching modern humans and then projecting forward into an extinction-threatened future.
The book requires patience from readers expecting a conventional plot, but it rewards that patience with a perspective on human existence that very few novels attempt. By the time the modern sections arrive, the earlier chapters give them a weight that a straightforward contemporary story could not achieve.
