The Evert Backstrom series follows one of Scandinavian crime fiction’s most memorable characters. Backstrom is an overweight, rude, and thoroughly self-satisfied detective who somehow manages to stumble his way through murder investigations. Despite his many personal failings, he has a genuine instinct for police work that keeps him relevant.
Starting with Linda, As in the Linda Murder in 2005, the series blends dark crime stories with sharp comedy. Persson uses Backstrom as both a comedic figure and a lens through which to examine Swedish society and its institutions. The character proved popular enough to inspire a short-lived American TV adaptation, though the books offer a much richer and more biting portrait of their unlikely hero.
