Hemingway’s stories appear in dozens of anthologies, which makes sense given how widely his short fiction is read and taught. These collections place his work alongside other major American and British writers, giving readers a chance to see how his spare style compares to his contemporaries and to authors from later generations.
Several of these anthologies focus on the short story as a form. 50 Great Short Stories and 50 Great American Short Stories are standard classroom texts that include Hemingway alongside Faulkner, Cheever, O’Connor, and others. The Best American Short Stories of the Century, edited by John Updike, features selections that defined American short fiction across a hundred years. Other volumes take a thematic approach: War: An Anthology collects writing about armed conflict, while 100 Years of Fishing gathers pieces about a subject Hemingway wrote about throughout his life.
The anthologies on this list are multi-author collections in which Hemingway’s work appears as one contributor among many. For readers looking for comprehensive collections of his writing alone, see the short story collections page. Writers At Work: The Paris Review Interviews features his well-known interview about craft and process rather than his fiction.
