Dan Walsh’s Epic Journeys series pairs two historical novels written nearly a decade apart. The Deepest Waters (2011) is based on a real 1857 shipwreck in the Atlantic, telling the story of a newlywed couple separated when their steamship goes down. The Longest Road (2020) shifts to a cross-country setting with a different cast.
Both books deal with physical and spiritual journeys, with characters pushed to their limits by circumstances beyond their control. Walsh grounds the stories in period detail and uses the external danger to test the relationships at each book’s center. Though they share a thematic connection, each book stands on its own.
