Niall Ferguson’s Empire examines how Britain built the largest empire in history and what that legacy means today. First published in 2003, the book argues that the British Empire, for all its flaws, spread free markets, the rule of law, and parliamentary government across the globe. Ferguson does not shy away from the empire’s darker side, but he contends that its overall contribution to modernity was significant.
The book was also adapted into a Channel 4 television series. The two entries here represent the American edition (The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power) and the UK/Penguin edition (Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World). Both contain the same core text.
