Emily Hauser’s non-fiction work addresses the same themes as her fiction: the role of women in the ancient Greek world. How Women Became Poets: A Gender History of Greek Literature (2023) is an academic study of how women participated in Greek literary culture despite being largely excluded from the historical record.
Her 2025 releases, Mythica and Penelope’s Bones, continue this focus. Mythica presents a new history of Homer’s world by centering the women who were written out of the traditional narratives, while Penelope’s Bones offers yet another angle on women’s experiences in antiquity.
