Emilio Salgari’s standalone novels showcase the geographic range of his imagination. “The Black Corsair” and “The Queen of the Caribbean” (1901) are set during the golden age of Caribbean piracy, featuring swashbuckling heroes and naval battles in the tradition of Alexandre Dumas. “The Son of The Red Corsair” (2006 English translation) continues the Corsair line.
More recent English translations have made additional Salgari works available to new audiences: “The Last Filibusters” (2020) and “The Quest for Buddha’s Scimitar” (2024) bring lesser-known novels into English for the first time. These translations reflect growing international interest in an author who has been read in Italy for over a century but remains less well known in the English-speaking world.
