Ellie’s People is Mary Christner Borntrager’s ten-book series about an Amish community. Beginning with Ellie (1988), each novel focuses on a different character: Rebecca, Rachel, Daniel, Reuben, Andy, Polly, Sarah, Mandy, and Annie. Together they create a full portrait of Amish life across nearly a decade of publication.
Borntrager grew up in an Amish community herself, which gives the books an authenticity that sets them apart from other Amish fiction. The series covers topics like courtship, family conflict, faith, and the tension between tradition and the outside world. Each character faces choices about what it means to stay in the community or consider leaving.
The books were published by Herald Press between 1988 and 1997 and became popular with readers of Christian and inspirational fiction. They are often recommended to younger readers as an introduction to Amish life and values. The ten-book format means the series has enough room to explore a whole range of community members, from the title character Ellie through to Annie in the final volume.
