Eleanor Burford Hibbert’s standalone novels span her entire career, from her earliest publications under her birth name through her final Victoria Holt gothic romances. The early novels from the 1940s and 1950s were contemporary fiction published as Eleanor Burford, and most are now out of print. Titles like Daughter of Anna, Passionate Witness, and Dear Chance belong to this early period.
Her career changed direction in 1960 with the publication of Mistress of Mellyn under the Victoria Holt pen name. That book, set in a brooding Cornish manor house, established the template for the modern gothic romance: a young woman arrives at a mysterious estate, falls in love with a secretive man, and uncovers dark secrets from the past. Bride of Pendorric, Kirkland Revels, and Menfreya in the Morning followed in quick succession. The Victoria Holt novels were enormous bestsellers and continued until The Black Opal in 1993, the year of Hibbert’s death.
Mixed in with the gothic romances are standalone Jean Plaidy historical novels about figures who did not fit neatly into her major series. Katharine of Aragon, Madame Du Barry, and The Queen’s Confession (about Marie Antoinette) are examples. The Scarlet Cloak, Evergreen Gallant, and Defenders of the Faith cover other periods of European history. Together, these 87 novels show the range of a writer who could move between contemporary romance, gothic suspense, and serious historical fiction with equal skill.
