The Edie Kiglatuk series by M.J. McGrath is set in the Canadian Arctic and follows Edie Kiglatuk, a guide and teacher who finds herself investigating crimes in one of the most isolated places on the planet. White Heat, the first book, begins when two hunters Edie is guiding discover a body on the ice. The series grew to four books between 2011 and 2014, including a Christmas novella.
The Arctic setting is the defining feature of these mysteries. McGrath writes about the landscape and Inuit culture with detail and respect, and the extreme environment shapes every aspect of the investigations. The series has been compared to the work of Peter Hoeg and Arnaldur Indridason for its cold-climate atmosphere.
