Edgar “Doc” Holiday is Kirk Alex’s version of the classic L.A. private eye, a character whose name nods to the famous Old West gunslinger. Doc is not the brooding, philosophical type. He prefers action over hand-wringing, and his investigations tend to end with bruised knuckles rather than tidy deductions. The series runs four books, each title built on alliteration: Hush-Hush Holiday, Hubba-Hubba Holiday, Hollow-Point Holiday, and Hard Noir Holiday.
Set in Los Angeles and beyond, the books are long, blunt-force affairs with staccato prose and frequent profanity. Doc’s world is populated by corrupt cops, cartel operators, and the kind of lowlifes who thrive in the cracks of a big city. Kirk Alex writes the series in a throwback pulp style that does not bother with subtlety. If you like your detective fiction rough around the edges and unapologetic about it, this is the series for you.
