Eagles of Rome follows Roman legions into the dark forests of Germania. Ben Kane’s eleven-entry series covers one of Rome’s greatest military disasters — the destruction of three legions at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest — and the Roman campaigns that followed. Eagles at War sets up the catastrophe, while Hunting the Eagles and Eagles in the Storm follow the Roman response.
The series expands with shorter pieces and translations, building a detailed picture of the Roman-Germanic frontier. Kane uses the forest setting to create claustrophobic battle sequences quite different from the open-field engagements of his Mediterranean-set novels.
