The Duncan McCormack series by Liam McIlvanney is a crime fiction duology set in 1960s Glasgow. DI Duncan McCormack is an outsider in the Glasgow police – a Highlander and a man with secrets – who is brought in to investigate cases the local force cannot solve.
The Quaker (2018) follows McCormack as he hunts a serial killer targeting women in Glasgow’s West End. The case has gone cold, and McCormack’s methods put him at odds with the established detectives. The Heretic (2022) takes McCormack into Glasgow’s criminal underworld and the sectarian tensions that run through the city. The series has drawn comparisons to William McIlvanney’s Laidlaw novels for its vivid portrayal of Glasgow and its morally complex detective.
