Dramacon was Svetlana Chmakova’s breakout work and one of the first original English-language manga (OEL manga) to gain a wide readership. Set at an anime convention, the story follows a young writer named Christie who attends with her artist boyfriend and meets a mysterious cosplayer. Each volume covers a different year’s convention, letting Chmakova track how characters grow between visits.
The series ran from 2005 to 2007 across three volumes before being collected into a single Ultimate Edition in 2008. Its convention setting gave Chmakova room to draw from real fan culture, and the romance at the heart of the story plays out with the kind of slow, awkward honesty that made her later Berrybrook Middle School books popular with younger readers.
