The Dr. Watson series takes Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous character and places him in the trenches of World War I. Watson, too old to fight but able to serve as a medical officer, re-enlists and heads to Flanders. When soldiers start dying from injuries that don’t match battlefield wounds, Watson realizes someone is using the chaos of war to cover up murders.
Robert Ryan wrote the series under license from the Conan Doyle estate. The five books, published between 2012 and 2016, combine historical fiction with detective storytelling. The Daily Express gave Dead Man’s Land a five-star review, calling it “genuinely fascinating and finely researched.”
