The Doona series began in 1969 with Anne McCaffrey’s Decision at Doona, a novel about human colonists who arrive on a seemingly empty planet only to discover it is already home to the Hrrubans, an intelligent cat-like species. Earth’s government has strict rules against contact with alien races, so the colonists face an impossible choice between abandoning their new home and finding a way to live alongside the Hrrubans.
McCaffrey returned to the setting decades later with co-author Jody Lynn Nye. Crisis on Doona (1992) and Treaty at Doona (1994) pick up the story years after first contact, following the next generation of humans and Hrrubans as they deal with smuggling rings, political sabotage, and threats to the fragile peace between their peoples.
The series works well as a first-contact story that focuses less on conflict and more on the hard work of cooperation. Readers who enjoy McCaffrey’s other work will recognize her interest in strong-willed characters dropped into situations where diplomacy matters more than force.
