The Don’t Tell the Groom series launched in 2012 with the novel of the same name, in which a bride-to-be accidentally gambles away their wedding fund and spends the book trying to hide the problem from her fiance while secretly planning an alternative. Anna Bell keeps the comedy grounded in genuine embarrassment and affection rather than farce, which gives the book more emotional pull than its premise might suggest.
The second book, Don’t Tell the Boss (2014), shifts focus to a new character dealing with the complications of hiding a pregnancy at work while managing a surprise for her partner. Don’t Tell the Brides-to-Be (2015) rounds out the trilogy by following a wedding planner whose professional life collides with her personal one. Each book is set in the same loosely connected world and shares a breezy tone, but the central relationships are distinct across all three.
Bell’s strength in these books is writing heroines who make understandable mistakes and then have to live with them in funny, sometimes mortifying ways. The series is a good starting point for readers new to her work and holds up well for a quick, enjoyable read.
