The Domesday series is set in 1086 England, shortly after William the Conqueror ordered a massive survey of all landholdings in the kingdom. Ralph Delchard, a Norman soldier, and Gervase Bret, a young Saxon lawyer, are sent to different counties to hear property disputes and settle claims. At each stop, they find that a murder has complicated things.
The series ran for eleven books between 1993 and 2000, with each title named after a different animal and location: The Wolves of Savernake, The Ravens of Blackwater, The Dragons of Archenfield, and so on. Marston uses the Domesday survey as a framework that naturally moves the characters around England and into new communities with new secrets.
