Flowers in the Attic, published in 1979, is the book that made V.C. Andrews a household name. It tells the story of four Dollanganger children hidden in their grandparents’ attic by a mother who needs to win back her inheritance. The children’s years of captivity and the forbidden bond that develops between the two oldest siblings shocked readers and turned the novel into a massive bestseller.
Andrews wrote the original five Dollanganger books herself. After her death, Andrew Neiderman added several more, including Christopher’s Diary books and prequels like Beneath the Attic. The series also includes some foreign-language editions listed as separate entries. For most readers, the first five books are the essential ones, with Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind being the most widely read.
