The D.O.D.O. series merges time travel, magic, and government bureaucracy in a way that’s characteristically Stephenson. The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., co-written with Nicole Galland, imagines a world where magic existed until 1851 and a secret agency now tries to bring it back using quantum physics and time travel. Master of the Revels, written by Galland alone, continues the story.
The series uses an epistolary format — diary entries, memos, and communications — to tell a story that’s equal parts spy thriller, historical adventure, and comedy of bureaucratic dysfunction.
